I love taking pictures.
There I said it. It’s supposed to be therapeutic when you confess your secrets, right? Somehow I don’t feel any better. And I still have 14,912 photos in iPhoto (988 videos) on my three-year old laptop.
I blame my dad for the shutterbug syndrome. I’m sure he’s the influence behind my addiction. He’s been carrying around a camera ever since I can remember.
I can’t help it. When I see delicious food, I have to shoot it. When I’m with my kids I have to snap one. When I’m around town I have to capture the beauty.
My Own Photos on my Blog
As much as possible, I use my own photos that I’ve taken. I think that it resonates better with all of YOU (my wonderful readers!) and I can create more emotion if it’s my own. But I still don’t have enough pictures for everything I want to use them for. How do you find the right pictures when you need them for your blog…for the right price – FREE?
Here a few posts that have with my own photos in them.
Stock Photography is Too Perfect
I’ve been using stock photography since the 90’s when I worked in graphic design. Back then it was sold on CDs and stock photography companies shipped then to you. Gosh I feel old.
Since I spend a bunch of my time online (as you can imagine) I have seen marketing campaigns use stock photography well and some…well, not so good. These articles will show you what I’m talking about.
- Hubspot – Can you find a good use for the businessman with balloons? Looks like he’s falling?
- Runners World – “Fake pose” comes to mind here. I’m not an expert on running, but I’m sure that this doesn’t show the best running form.
Did you get a kick out of those?
The Right Price
Finding great stock photos is difficult. You’re left with either low-res amateur photos on free stock photo sites or photos that are out of budget for your project.
So how about FREE?
I stumbled across a few sites that will offer just that – completely FREE photos, no attribution necessary. It’s still always smart to check each photo to see if you can use it, with our without attribution. Just a disclaimer.
Here’s a list that you’ve been waiting for. You’ll find some gorgeous lifestyle photos that will make your blog shine. That is if your own is not cutting it. There’s a place for both on your blog to best work with your brand.
I’ll be adding to this list (so bookmark it for later!) of sites that I’ve found that have good images for the right price. I found a few others as well but the following sites made my short list. Happy searching!
Here are three graphics I recently created with Death to the Stock Photo pictures.
- Public Domain Archive
- ISO Republic
- Jay Mantri
- Kaboom Pics
- IM Creator – FREE
- Little Visuals
- Startup Stock Photos
- The Stocks
- The Pattern Library
Here’s a few of the beautiful pictures that leap off the digital page from the above sites. Gorgeous and free. Enjoy!
If you have a site to add, please let me know in comments!
